PowerPoint Tips: Compress Media Files

Lesson 8: Compress Media Files

Compress media files

When using audio or video in PowerPoint, the file size of your presentation can get pretty big. To get the size under control, you can compress the media in your presentation.

We recommend making a backup copy of your presentation before doing any compression. Keep in mind that once you save and close the file, the change will be permanent.

Watch the video below to learn how to compress media files in PowerPoint.

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation that contains audio or video files.
  2. Click on the File tab in the PowerPoint menu.
  3. Select Compress Media.
  4. Choose the level of compression you want to apply to the media. For example, select Presentation Quality to get a balance between file size and quality.
  5. Wait for the compression process to finish. PowerPoint will show you how much space you have saved. Then click Close to leave the window.

After compressing your media files, you can share your presentation more easily and avoid performance issues.
