Who uses the platform?

Did you know that WP was originally designed for blogging? While countless bloggers continue to use this software, today it’s capable of much more. Here’s how different groups of people have used WP, customizing (or modifying) their webpages to meet their specific needs…

Bloggers and hobbyists

WP makes it possible to connect with others who share your interests. You can post useful information, or join other community sites and then link to your own page. Once you begin developing your content, you might consider turning your passion into a career.

Maybe you start off by sharing family recipes, and then decide to open a restaurant—or you’re a blogger who’s traveling around the world, and you want to try your hand at being a freelancer. Creating your own website could be the key to unlocking future possibilities.

Business owners

If you want to open a local business and attract customers, making a WP site is a good first step. You can upload things like a menu, a list of prices, or directions on how to get to your storefront.

A company website can also help you to build your brand. For instance, you can include a logo or a unique color scheme that customers will recognize. You can share a backstory about how you got started, or a mission statement about what you hope to bring to the community.

Online stores

Many people use WP to create their own online store where they sell products and services. You can attract new customers by advertising on Etsy or Facebook Marketplace.

By installing a plugin, you can let visitors make purchases directly on your site. For instance, you can integrate a system such as PayPal or Apple Pay. Plugins are one of WP's main types of building blocks. To learn what they are and how they’re useful, watch the video below.

Students and professionals

WP can be used to build your resume or portfolio. Maybe you’re a high school student preparing for college, or an artist trying to get your name out there.

On your site, you could list your accomplishments, make a contact page, or even upload images to a gallery. Having your own webpage  gives you an opportunity to showcase your skills and grow your network.

Community organizers

Organizations use WP for fundraising and recruiting volunteers. You can add plugins to run activities like countdowns and petitions for change.

Maybe your nonprofit wants to send out a monthly newsletter, or weekly emails to subscribers. In this day and age, having an online presence—or being active online—can make a big difference when it comes to your organization’s success.

So remember…

So whether you want to make a personal or a professional website, WP can help you in pursuing your goals. In the next lesson, we’ll talk about some initial steps for setting up your site.
